At the beginning of every year I stress now is the time to get yourself Financially Fit! We all vow to lose weight and become healthier but getting our finances fit should be a major concern to your well-being. Some financial facts that the government has tallied are frightening. The United States has the lowest national savings rate in the industrialized world. The average family saw its credit card debt grow by 53 percent during the 1990s. In 2006, 617,660 Americans filed for bankruptcy. These are some facts that get me worried. Let’s start 2012 off by being responsible for our money. Take the time by setting up a budget. Know how much money is coming in and how much is going out. For many people this can be an overwhelming task, ask a friend. Sit down with a friend who will have a nonobjective viewpoint to help you bring your debt down. Start by getting yourself prepare for anything that comes your way. Each month do a couple of tasks to bring you closer to become Financially Fit!
January:
• Let’s set up a budget. A free budgeting worksheet is available at www.financialfitness.org
• Update 2012 cost-of-living adjustments for 401 (k) and individual retirement accounts (IRA).
Your local banks have financial advisors that will help you determine what is the best way for you to plan for your retirement.
• Now is the time for high school seniors to finish college scholarship applications.
• Enroll in Kentucky Saves at www.kentuckysaves.org. Receive monthly American Saver Newsletter and e-Wealth Coach Series along with lots of information to help you survive in these economic times.
February:
• 2011 W-2 and 1099 tax forms are sent to you by January 31. Start a file to compile them, along with all other records and receipts for your state and federal tax returns.
• America Saves week is February 19 through February 26th this is the perfect time to think about saving, reducing debt and investing. Visit www.americasaves.org for resources.
• Kentucky students in grades 6, 7 and 8 are eligible to participate in the Kentucky Saves Week poster contest. A student from each grade level will receive a $50 US savings bond. A selection of student artwork will be displayed in the state capitol during Kentucky Saves Week. Check out details at www.jumpstart.org/states-kentucky.
• Compare actual January expenses to your personal budget and make adjustments.
March:
• Take the 5% challenge at www.feedthepig.org. Determine what dollar figure you need to put away every month and make that commitment.
• Corporate tax returns are due. Visit www.irs.gov for forms and filing information.
• Obtain the free application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) for 2012 from your high school guidance counselor, or visit ww.fasa.ed.gov. Deadline to submit is June 30, 2013.
April:
• Financial Literacy Month begins. Reserve your space to watch the free, live International Solutions to Improving Financial Literacy summit via webcast at www.practicalmoneyskills.com/summit2012/
• You are entitled to three national credit report from Experian, Eequifax and TransUnions upon request, once every 12 months. Reviewing one’s credit report regularly is an effective way to deter and detect identity theft. Start by requesting a report now at www.annualcreditreport.com

• Your Federal Income Tax return is due on April 15 to the U.S. Internal Revenue Service. Visit www.irs.gov for forms and online filing information. This is also the last day to establish or contribute to an Individual Retirement Account (IRA) in 2011 and file partnership returns.
• Check out your local Walmart store where free preparation of the simple tax forms will be made available at more than 3,000 stores nationwide.
May
• Take the time to deter identity theft by cleaning out your wallet or purse. Limit the amount of confidential information in your wallet. Only carry the identification, checks, credit cards or debit cards you really need. Social Security cards are best keep elsewhere in a safe place.
• Make copies of the front and back of all the cards. This will help you to report a loss or request a new card.
• Review your credit report. Call up your credit card accounts and bank to report any unauthorized charges. You then must follow up on any phone calls to your card issuer with a letter disputing the transaction. “Under the Fair Credit Billing Act, you must dispute unauthorized charges appearing on your credit card statement in writing within 60 days after it was sent to you” noted Joni Creamean, Chief of the FDIC’s Consumer Response Center.

• Look for ways to save money by making your house more energy efficient. Now that the weather is nice walk around your house making sure your windows caulking is fine and everything looks in good shape.
• Sign up for Kentucky Utilities Demand Conservation program. They will install a free device on your central air conditioner, heat pump or electric water heater and credit your utility bill $5 per month for June through September for each air conditioner unit.

• Labor Day was established to honor American workers. Reward your hard work by planning for your retirement.
• Consider a college savings plan, like an education Individual Retirement Account or 529 plan, to help fund your child’s higher education.

• Look for ways to improve your fuel efficiency by slowing down, check for regular maintenance repairs, carpool, tires inflated properly and try to cut back on AC.
• Go Green. Going green not only saves the environment but also helps you save money. Invest in reusable products like batteries and bags. Shop at second hand stores. Fix up your old things before you run out to buy new ones. One of the top ways of saving money is to be organized. Think of how many times you needed toilet paper and ran to the store to pay full price. Just like a boy scout being prepared will save you lots and lots of money. In past post I mentioned going out and buying your wrapping paper, gift bags, bows and Christmas decorations now. I always go back and remember what I used for this past season and what needs to be replaced. I have a box that is full of gift bags, tape, ribbon, cards, and especially gift card holders. Getting them now for 75% off or 90% off will be a huge savings but having them already on hand will also make the holidays less stressful. Don’t rule out getting presents for birthdays at Christmas sales. Yesterday I bought beautiful spa socks and spa cremes in a nice basket(didn’t look holiday at all) for 75% off. I always like to have a supply of little gifts for a nice hostess gift or just someone’s birthday you forgot about.

I laughed when I watched the new show “2 Broke Girls” last week. The show is about a rich girl whose father is in jail for embezzling people’s money ultimately making her family broke. She is now a waitress trying to make ends meet last week she discovers coupons. At first she is ashamed to be seen using coupons but when she sees how much money she can save she is hooked. When I was growing up there was a stigma that if you used coupons you were poor. Now when shopping you will see many women and men walking around with their coupon binder or coupon folders in their shopping cart. Many of us have come to conclusion that not using coupons is really throwing your money away. My favorite place to find coupons is the Sunday paper but there are other avenues to get more coupons. Different stores have electronic coupons that you can load right on the store’s loyalty card and mobile coupons that load on your smartphone. To load digital coupons on your Kroger Plus card just go to www.kroger.com and register your card then you will be able to click on a coupon which will automatically be deducted from your total at the register when you purchase the qualifying product. There are two more sites that also let you load ecoupons onto your Kroger Plus card they are www.shortcuts.com and www.cellfire.com . I do want you to remember that you cannot use a paper coupon with an electronic coupon and the electronic coupon will be deducted first. One other downfall is an electronic coupon will not double. So load your coupons wisely. RiteAid just introduced their new program called load2card. This allows Rite Aid Wellness plus members to load, manage and redeem digital coupons via their wellness card. Just go to www.riteaid.com and register your wellness card and start adding savings right to your card. Now one of my favorite stores to use mobile coupons is Target. Get deals sent to you twice a month and redeem them at the register right from your phone’s screen. Send HELP to 827438 for information or STOP to 827438 to end. You could receive up to 5 messages per month. Message and data rates may apply. The internet has given us the opportunity to print coupons right from home. If you look at your Sunday paper’s inserts you will see that each insert has a website where you can also print off additional coupons. The inserts we usually get are www.redplum.com and www.smartsource.com. A couple of other websites for coupons are www.coupons.com and www.couponnetwork.com these are reputable coupon sites where you will not get a fraudulent coupon. When printing a coupon off the internet make sure it has a barcode, expiration date, says manufacturer coupon along with little dots in the expiration date box. Remember sometimes if it is too good to be true it probably is a fake. These sites will also only let you print two copies of a coupon. I always tell everyone coupons are everywhere if there is a product that you like go to their website 80% of the time they will offer a coupon for example www.kelloggs.com have many printable coupons available. Now into the next generation of couponing http://SavingStar.ojrq.net/c/21545/17146/758 Saving Star. Saving Star gives you the option of loading your stores loyalty cards for example: CVS Extracare card, Kroger Plus Card and Rite Aid Wellness card and linking ecoupons to your stores cards. When you use your loyalty card and purchase an item that you have loaded an ecoupon for, it will automatically add that coupon amount to your Saving Star account. When you have reached the minimum of $5 you can have that amount sent to a Pay Pal account, Amazon.com gift card, right to your bank, or American Forest.org charity account. You will not see a deduction to your bill. The plus to this is you will be able to use a paper coupon plus use your ecoupon from Saving Star. This is going to be a little work but will be worth it for any Kroger shopper. Go to www.kroger.com and click on save more with digital coupons. Add any P&G coupons to your card. Tell 4 friends, and P&G will instantly load an additional $4 to your shopper card. Use this with the mega deal for a huge savings. Remember you cannot use a paper coupon and a digital coupon for the same items and the digital coupon will come off first. Also digital coupons do not double.
Load the $2 Tide coupon, $3 Pantene coupon, $1 Gain coupon and $1 Charmin coupon and it should cover you. I have not tested this yet but it is right on their website so it should work.
I also want to mention about the deal I posted for the Visa Vanilla Gift Card. I think Rite Aid has pulled item from their $20 +UPs reward deal. I would advise not to try it. Sorry. Unfortunately good things do have to come to an end.

Rite Aid has a new program Resolution Rewards earn a $20 +UP Rewards when you spend $100 on qualify products or more with your wellness plus card through January 28. One of the items is VISA VANILLA gift card. I loaded $100 on the card did have to pay $4.95 for activation fee but received $20 +UP rewards. Some Rite Aids are having issues on the +UPs reward but remember if for any reason you do not get it call the 800 number on receipt and they will send you the $20 +UP rewards.

HAPPY NEW YEARS!
According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the average American
family of four spends $8,513 per year on groceries- averages out to $709 per
month. That breaks down to $177 per person a month. Many of us blow our budget
even further on restaurant meals. Let’s start 2012 saving on your groceries
along with personal items. Today’s paper has over $200 worth of coupons making
this a big haul to start cutting coupons. I would love to tell you that you can
save $100 of dollars and it won’t take you any time at all. That is not the
case. When starting your coupon journey you need to be organized. When you spend
time cutting your coupons spend time organizing them in an accordion style file
by categories. Remember everyone’s file is going to be different. I don’t have
any babies so I don’t have a baby category but I do have pets so I have a pet
category. What you need to do is make it easy to find a coupon when you need to.
You will get very frustrated if you know you have a coupon for that product on
sale but can’t find it. Do not assume that you won’t need a coupon when you
enter a store. Bring your coupons with you at all times. You will be very
surprised how many times you go to a store and a manager has marked down an item
because they have too many allowing you with a coupon get that item for free. It
is interesting how many people think that something’s wrong with the product or
the price marked must be wrong because the item can’t be that cheap. Is one
store better than other stores? The store I frequent most doubles my coupons up
to 50 cents every day, I feel that is the best value for my coupons. Remember
using a coupon for an item on sale plus being doubled is an added bonus. Don’t
forget about your local pharmacy stores like CVS, Rite Aid and Walgreens for
food, cleaning items and personal products. Using loyalty cards along with other
reward programs combined with coupons can give you huge savings on items. Here
are some ways to use your week’s coupons for high value savings.

1. Most stores will let you use a store coupon along with a
manufacturer coupon for one item.
2. To tell a manufacturer coupon the UPC code will start with the
number 5.
3. Check out your store’s coupon policy. Because of the TLC show
Extreme Couponing most stores have posted their policies on their website along
with printed copies at the customer service desk.
4. Maximize the Buy 1 Get One Free deals. You can typically use 2 coupons for a B1G1 deal. For
example, if Quaker Oatmeal is on sale Buy One at $2.50, Get One Free and you
have 2 $1.00/1 coupons, use 2 coupons. You will get 2 boxes of oatmeal for .50.
5. Check out store that price match.
Walmart and Target will match sale prices from other stores. Also ask your store
if they will use a competitors coupons for example Staples will let you use
coupons from Office Depot or OfficeMax.
Is it worth the time to clip coupons? By using coupons and sales you very easily can
get 50% off your shopping trip at your local grocery store. Fayette County
Libraries have partnered with me to help all of you learn how to save money.
