Column 1-14

The most important advice I have for you as we start 2010 is to be responsible for your money. Know where it is going and why. There are new credit card laws that have been put in place to help you fix your credit card woes. Here are changes giving you more protection. ■ Remember pay off your credit card each month. If you can’t afford it don’t buy it.

■ Promotional rates on new cards must last at least six months. If you can pay off the balance by then, it might be a good deal.

■ When you make a payment above the minimum it must be applied to the highest-interest balance first helping you reduce your debt faster.

■ Paying your bill by phone is free of charge when the company offers this service.

■ Unless a responsible adult co-signs or the applicant can prove a reliable income, people under 21 can’t get a credit card.

■ If payment is 60 days late or you have a variable-rate card the new rate applies only to new purchases.

■ Your bill must disclose how long it will take to pay off the balance and how much interest you’ll pay, if you send in only the minimum.
