Frugal Forum July 28- column and extras

I can remember my child’s first birthday with the big decorated cake along with a clown for entertainment. We had all the family there along with lots of kids. He had fun but looking back he would have been fine with all the kids playing ball outside. When did this phenomenon happen that everything has to be over the top? I have heard parents say my daughter wants a princess party so they purchased a cake that was equivalent to a wedding cake along with renting out a limo. Have we stopped using our imagination or are we just too busy? My sister-in-law is the master of parties. I am sure that the neighborhood children can’t wait for her kid’s birthdays. Last year I bought lots of pirate themed Halloween items that were marked down 90 percent. She made treasure maps and the kids searched for buried treasure dressed up like pirate right down to the parrot on the shoulder. They had a ball. Her child and their friends will probably always remember that party. Being creative and proactive is one huge way to save money. Buying items from previous seasons that have been marked down can give the impression of spending lots of money. Let’s start now with the next purchased you need to make for your child-back to school supplies. Grab that list and check out the sales. Don’t wait until the last minute. Buying an extra pack of pens or paper now with the back to school sales will only save you money when you child turns to you one night saying, Oh by the way I need a file folder and paper for school tomorrow. Right now I cannot even list all the sales going on just go to CVS, Walgreens, Target, Kroger, Staples, Office Max and Office Depot to get school supplies for $1 and under.

Don’t forget to come to my next coupon class where we will talk about saving on school supplies plus other everyday expenses at Northside Library, 1733 Russell Cave Road on Thursday, August 11 starting at 6:30pm. No reservations required just come and learn.
