Frugal Column and Extras September 18

I am excited to be in the Sunday paper what a great place for The Fru-Gal to be with all her coupon friends. I am hoping there are new readers that would like a little help starting their couponing journey. I wish I could tell you that it doesn't take any time or effort to coupon but with a little organization you will be on your way to reaping big savings. What I recommend for the beginner couponer is to purchase a small accordion file that you can categorize your coupons for easy access. The last situation you want is to enter a store see a sale know you have a coupon but can’t find it. You will end up being frustrated and give up. When you are shopping keep your eyes open. There is plenty of savings right in front of you. Manufacturers are now putting “peelie” coupons on their packages. These coupons peel off the product for you to use with purchase. Walking down the aisle you will see “blinkies” these are electronic coupons holders that are mounted on a shelf. You just take a coupon and another on comes out. Think of coupons like money. Take a blinkie even if you are not going to use it right away. You will be very angry with yourself if next week the item is on sale and you didn’t file away that coupon. Remember that the best way to use a coupon is when the item is on sale resulting in double savings. There are many websites on the internet that you can print coupons. I stick to just a couple that I know are valid coupons. The last thing you want to do is go to a store with a fraudulent coupon.,, and are sincere sites for printing coupons. Kroger stores also have digital coupons. If you go to their website you can load coupons directly to your loyalty card. This means when you swipe your card the savings will come off the end of your transaction. Meijers has a program called Mperks that when sign up with your mobile phone number you can load coupons right on the phone number allowing you to receive the savings at checkout when you enter your mobile number at the register. Target and many other retailers’ text coupons so all you have to do is show your phone to the cashier and they will scan the coupon on your phone to receive the savings. I recommend that you know your stores policies. Print out Krogers, Target, Walgreens, CVS, Meijers, Walmart and RiteAid policies and file them with your coupons. Many cashiers don’t know the policies and if you are taking the time to use your coupons properly you want the coupons to work. Be respectful and show them the policy.

Here are additional tips for couponing. Most stores will accept a store coupon along with a manufacturer coupon. Check to see if your store doubles coupons up to 50 cents. This means that when you use a 50 cents coupon at Krogers it will deduct $1 off your order. Kroger does not have a limit of coupons it will double but Meijer will double the first two identical coupons but not anymore. If your coupon is more than the price of the item most stores will adjust the coupon to the purchase price making the item free. Walmart’s new policy gives you the total price of the coupon even if it is more than the price of the item. People have been receiving money back on purchases.

When you start your couponing journey I guarantee that you will be excited when you start saving lots of money. You will start to challenge yourself to save even more your next trip to the store.
