Now that the weather is getting nicer it is time for some spring cleaning. So just like your closets need a good clean out every spring your financial clutter also needs sprucing up. Between the holidays and just the cold weather we tend to let some of our financial responsibility fall behind. Being organized makes it much easier to handle all of your money matters from paying bills to filing your important papers. I strongly recommend spending a little bit of money to get you some file holders, containers and labeling markers. When you are done with your project you will feel rejuvenated and fresh with a new financial beginning.

First get organized.
Go all around the house and get all documents that need to be filed or shredded. Right now Office Depot is offering free 5 pounds of shredding with online coupon. http://www.officedepot.com/speciallinks/us/od/docs/taxcoupons_shredding.pdf  Get a folder for each type of document from bank statements, medical bills, utilities, investments, tax returns and supporting documents, credit card bills, and insurance bills then file.

De-cluttering your electronic device.
With computers, smartphones and iPads our electronic life can get cluttered as well. Start with your online banking information by eliminating accounts you don’t pay any more and set up new accounts to save money on postage by paying your bills online. Check out your emails and clear out all the old ones. Remember that most emails from businesses will allow you to unsubscribe at any time. If you don’t read them get rid of them.

Now is the time to check your credit.
You get three credit reports free per year. Go to annualcreditreport.com to get your report and check for mistakes. Fix errors and make it a point to note which areas could use some improvement.

Evaluate your insurance coverage
Make sure your assets are adequately covered. Read your insurance policies check deductables. Bundling your auto and home policies can save you money. Call your agent or bring your policy to another company to compare price.

Check your rates.
Do a yearly housekeeping call to your major monthly bill producers like cable, phone and internet  checking if you are getting the lowest rate. The worst thing they can say is “No” but you might get lucky by just asking they may reduce your bill.
