Not since the economy has gotten bad did the word Staycations become a staple in many households. The definition of staycation is a period in which an individual or family stays home and participates in leisure activities within driving distance, sleeping in their own beds at night. Many common activities of staycations include family pools, visits to local parks and museums or local festivals. Check out your local chamber of commerce and for local events. Being creative and proactive by registering for programs will give your family many wonderful memories within your budget.

Barnes and Noble: To reward your children in Grades 1-6 for reading during the summer, Barnes & Noble is offering up a Summer Reading Program that rewards kids with a FREE book after they have read 8 books of their choice. To participate, your kids will need to:
*Read any 8 books and record them in the Reading Journal found here.
*Take the completed Reading Journal to their local Barnes & Noble store between May 21st and September 3rd, 2013.
*Chose a FREE Book from the selection on the Reading Journal list at your local store

Joseph Beth Booksellers: Sign up your children for Joseph-Beth’s Adventure to Summer Reading. They will receive a passport, cool stickers, free dessert every time they read a book, plus read 6 books get one free.

Half Price Books: Children 14 and under can earn $5 in Half Price Books Back to School Bucks when they join the Half Price Books Feed Your Brain Summer Reading Program. They will need to read for at least 15 minutes each day in the months of June and July, or have a grown up read to them. Download the reading log to record your child’s progress. Then turn it in to receive $5 in Half Price Books Back-to-School Bucks. The $5 discount card can then be applied to the pre-tax amount for a future purchase valid until 8/28/13. Limit one coupon per person, per visit.

Chuck E Cheese: Each time your child reads for 2 weeks in a row, they will earn 10 FREE tokens at Chuck. E. Cheese!  Head on over here to print the form. Valid through 12/31/13 at participating locations. Food purchase required for redemption. Limit 1 of any free token offer per child per day.

Lexington Public Library: Sign up for summer reading program for kids, teens and adults. Teens read just 15 hours then bring in your reading log to receive a free book, kids fill out your log to get invited to the Finishers party at the end of summer plus put in a drawing to win prizes.
At participating bowling alleys across the country, Kids can Bowl Free all summer long (up to 6 kids)! Just register your child and click your state on the map to find a participating location near you. Your child will receive two free fames of bowling every day all summer long. Each bowling alley has its own start and finish dates and age restrictions, which you will see when you select one from the list. Keep in mind that you do have to pay taxes as well as the shoe rental fee, which will vary by location. Be sure to call your local participating bowling alley to find out the shoe rental cost before you make a special trip.

Cinemark Theatre: The Summer Movie Clubhouse is a ten week program of recently released G and PG for kids where the cost is $1 per person. You can purchase a punch card for all ten movies for $5 while supplies last. Check out your local theatre for times and dates.

Apple Store: Kids 8 -12 can attend a free Apple Camp to learn how to shoot their own footage, create an original song in GarageBand on an iPad and put it all together in iMovie on a Mac.

Home Depot: Home Depot offers free classes to kids the first Saturday of every month from 9am to 12pm. Kids get to take home their craft plus an orange apron and achievement pin.

Lowes: Lowes offer Build and Grow workshop for kids check out website for times and craft. Your child will also receive a free apron, safety goggles and a patch.

Disney Store: The Disney Store has free events throughout the year that usually involves costumes, stories, music, and games your children will love.

Visa Signature Card: Purchase two tickets on Fridays at Fandango website with your Visa Signature card and receive on one ticket free.

MoonDance Amphitheatre- Beaumont Circle: Every Tuesday in the summer starting June 4 to June 25, enjoy for free a Big Band and Jazz Series concert starting  from 7pm to 8:30pm. Bring your lawn chairs or blankets and pack a picnic dinner. For more information call Lexington Parks & Recreation 288-2925.

Redbox: Create a new account and reserve your first movie online, you will score an account credit valid for a free one-night DVD rental after returning  your first rental.

If you are a homeschool family, here’s a nice program for kids in grades K-6. Through September 1st, fill out the form to request free BOOK IT! materials for the 2013-14 Pizza Hut BOOK IT! Program – you will receive coupons for free personal pizzas along with materials to motivate your child to read.
