Fru-Gal Column March 10

I am going to give a refresher course on all things couponing. I get many readers asking me questions. I hope this will help with any confusion with your shopping trips.
I always start my classes telling people that there are many ways to get coupons. The great old fashion way is buying the Sunday paper. What other ways is there to get great coupons? Start with grabbing what we call “Blinkies”. These are coupons that are dispensed through the electronic gizmos on the side of the grocery aisles. When you see a blinkie grab a couple of coupons to put in your coupon holder. Just because you grab the coupon doesn’t mean you need to use it right then. A company puts out coupons for you to try their products. A coupons value is an extra bonus when the item is on sale so use the coupon during a sale. Last week I was buying dry dog food and on the package there was a “Peelie” for a free can of dog food. Peelies are coupons right on a package that you peel off to use. You would be surprised how many peelies are on products for money off or offering free products. Walking through the store keep your eyes open. You will see special displays throughout stores celebrating holidays, back to school, sports and more, the best part with these celebrations is sometimes there are brochures that offer recipes and more often coupons. Don’t just walk by; grab one and take a look. Catalinas are coupons offered right at the register. When you are checking out there is a little machine by the register that spits out coupons related to your purchases. Don’t over look these coupons sometimes they are even for dollars off your next shopping trip. Many supermarkets send coupons through the mail. If you are not receiving any Kroger coupons I would go to customer service making sure they have the right address for your Kroger Plus Card. Kroger management told me that many people felt that they would get junk mail when signing up for the card that they didn’t put the correct address. Internet coupon sites are jumping up all over. Unfortunately there are fraudulent coupons. Make sure that the coupon has a bar code to be scanned. I have found when I print coupons from the products actual site and from www.coupons.com they are always genuine. Now you are ready to use your coupons. Let’s start with BOGO this abbreviation means buy one get one free. Most stores will let you use two coupons for these deals. Stores handle this promotion differently take for instant Kroger supermarkets mark each item 50% off enabling you to just buy one item. Does your store double coupons? Kroger supermarket s in Central Kentucky will double everyday up to 50 cents coupon. Always remember when a supermarket offer 10 for $10 deals you don’t need to buy ten of that item it just means one item is $1. Find out your stores policies. Wal-Mart just put out a new coupon policy in which they will even give you money back on coupon overages. Don’t be nervous using coupons. Make sure that you get the correct product, the right quantity and the coupon is not expired. If a cashier doesn’t accept it ask to see a manager. I tell my class that this is your hard earned money fight for it- nicely. I rarely have trouble at the register. If you want to learn how to better use your coupons, The Fayette Extension Homemakers Association and myself are offering a class on April 14th downtown at The Central Library starting at 6:30pm. Call the library at (859) 231-5500 to register.
