Fru-Gal Update May 5

Is your local grocery store the best place to go for food? We are very fortunate that our city offers many different types of stores to get everything we need to survive. If you need milk, over the counter medications or personal care items, drugstores like Walgreens, CVS or RiteAid can offer surprisingly good deals. Many of these pharmacies offer some great deals on food to get you into the store hoping you are going to buy some higher priced products. This week at Walgreens get salt for 50 cents, Butterball Chicken broth for 50 cents and olives for 99 cents. Go to RiteAid where you can pick up Raisin Bran cereal, Pop-Tarts and Rice Krispies snacks for just $1.99. CVS has Sun Chips on sale for $3 each buy two bags and use $2 Sunday paper coupon making the final price $2 each. Next are the Supercenters like Walmart and Target these stores will match sale prices and accept coupons. Warehouse Clubs like Sam’s Club sell everything from meat to mattresses. You do need to purchase an annual membership and you cannot use coupons at these stores. In warehouse clubs remember that even if you eventually use the large amount of products you just bought you may not have the storage space to accommodate the product. The shopping experience in these big box stores can be very unfriendly and uncomfortable. I tend to spend much of my time just locating the products. We now have discount grocers like Aldi that sell private label products instead of brand names, but in many cases prices can be lower than a regular supermarket. These stores do not accept coupons, you need to bag your own groceries, bring your own bags and don’t forget to bring a quarter to get a shopping cart. What is the best way for you to save money while shopping? I use coupons when shopping so going to a warehouse club isn’t going to give me the best deal. Kroger doubles any coupon up to 50 cents everyday making my coupons worth even more. Target lets you use a store coupon along with a manufacturer coupon helping you save double the amount on an item. Walmart’s new coupon policy even gives you back money if your coupon is a higher amount than the product purchase price. Keep all your options open when shopping. Maybe step into a new store to see what other deals are available. Remember to check your prices and compare for the best deals.
