When you make a purchase whether it is a small purchase like a phone or larger purchase like a television if it doesn’t work or do what it is supposed to do you should get your money back. You should always know the stores return policy before purchasing anything. Believe it or not some people don’t go back to the store with the defective product. What I tell people all the time is a store generally wants to have you as a customer so they will do whatever they can to make you happy. Don’t try to scam the store; if you dropped it you own it. I would check with my credit card company to see what warrantee policies they have, some will get your money back in a specified amount of days even if you dropped it. Keep your cool. When you are confronting the salesperson whether it is in person or on the phone getting angry will only make the situation worst. Just stick to the facts and be respectful. The sooner you complain, the better your chance of getting a refund or resolving the problem. Do you belong to any “best customer” or rewards programs that the company offers? If they see that you a loyal customer you could get special treatment. Know what it is going to take for you to feel right about the situation. If the salesperson says “What can I do set this right?” know what compensation you are looking for. First ask the company what they are willing to offer then make your counteroffer. Keeping records of your purchase is a key element of getting your money back. Holding on to your receipts or any other paper will only help. Keep a record of who you spoke to on the phone, what they said, when they said it and what actually happened. If nothing comes of this write a firm but polite short letter to the CEO. If you don’t hear back in a month, call or write again to follow up. As a last resort, file your complaint with the BBB (bbb.org), which will forward your grievance to the company and may act as a mediator. Because unresolved disputes become part of public record, the company is motivated to cooperate.
I use the above philosophy even when it comes to coupons. Each store has their own coupon policy that they post on their website. I print it out just to reference when I am told I cannot use a certain coupon. There have been situations where I have been wrong or where the manager just won’t accept a coupon so I put the product back and calmly walk away. I do want to state that most of the time all my area stores really want you to be happy and come back again. Here are a few tips to make your checkout an uneventful experience.
1. Any Internet coupon should be legible.
2. Coupons have to say Manufacturer coupon or store coupon on the top.
3. Must have a valid remit address for the manufacturer.
4. Must have a scannable bar code.
5. Must have an expiration date.
6. Internet coupons can be printed just in black and white. (save money on your color cartridges)
