Debbi's Frugal Forum July 8, 2012

Every first Monday of the month a group of people get together at The Fayette County Extension Offices on Red Mile Road to talk about saving money. Dianna Doggett, Fayette County Extension Agent for Family and Consumer Sciences starts off our savings club with a lesson based on the aspects of living better financially, mentally and physically. Each month we have a different topic to discuss and teach each other different ways to save money. I asked the club to give a tip they use to save money (other than couponing). Here is a little lesson from our savings club to you. If you would like to join the club it is a $5 fee to Fayette County Homemakers or just stop in on our next meeting August 6th, at 6:30PM to see what it is all about.

Carolyn:

I cut dryer sheets in half getting twice the use out of one sheet. I cut the green dish scrubbies in thirds. The size works better for my hands while getting three times as many uses. Unplug unnecessary items in your house to reduce your electric bill.

Jennifer Sutherland:

To save money when packing a cooler for summer outings take a gallon milk jug fill about 90% full and place in freezer. Use a hammer to bust up the ice in the gallon jug making big chucks of ice which lasts longer than small cubed ice bags.

Deb Stringer:

I go to the Free Friday Night Flicks. I start by going to the Dollar Tree getting my movie treats like popcorn, candy and soda. Check where you work to see if they offer any discount programs. My company offers a cell phone program.

Angela Carpenter:

Line dry your clothes to save electricity. Cut open tubes and bottles of ointments or creams to get the last amount. Reuse grocery bags or any type of good condition product bag for garbage.

Dianna Doggett:

Always ask about AAA or AARP discounts. Check out the area consignment stores. When booking a hotel see if they offer free breakfast. Don’t forget about beauty schools for discounted haircuts.

Myrna Dalton

As a stay at home mom I set up a budget and stuck to it. Cooking 95% of my families meals at home saved me money.

Here are some random tips:

I dump dish water and bathtub water on the grass. I reuse cat litter buckets for gardening and tool containers. I let the kids go through the junk mail to practice reading skills. Fill up your car during the coolest part of the day. Always ask for a discount from the dentist to eye doctors etc.
