Remember what the holiday season means to your family. I
know that as a parent you want to get everything on your child’s list or you
may overspend trying to get that perfect gift for family or friends. A women
told me a story about her grandma box. She says that her grandmother is on a fixed
income so all year long she has a box that she fills with canned goods,
toiletries, cleaning supplies and health and beauty items. Her grandmother
looks forward to this box every year. When I teach my classes I hear many
stories of people who have gotten laid off from their jobs or something has
happened leaving them in a bad situation. A woman told me she felt terrible she
couldn’t go to the store to buy presents but what she did get for everyone was
a stocking filled with lots of personal grooming items plus other daily use
products. The stockings were the hit of the morning, everyone was so excited
going through all the items she said it was such a good feeling. One holiday memory I have is baking cookies
with my mother and putting them on platters to give out as presents. It was a
gift that took time but not a lot of money but everyone waited for those
cookies. If you have a large family try to do a gift exchange rather than
asking for members of the family to buy gifts for each and every member of the
family. In a gift exchange, each member of the family draws a name out of a hat
and then only buys a gift for that specific person. It is also perfectly
reasonable to share the cost of a gift with a friend or relative. The recipient
won’t mind if the gift is from one or two or more people they will be happy
they got what they wanted. Don’t forget
to use the talent that you have. If you are a knitter people would love to
receive a scarf or mittens. Remember isn’t the price of the gift it is the
thought that goes into it.
